The number one reason why your hair always frizz is likely due to moisture. A hair that lacks moisture due to being exposed to too much heat is prone to frizz (which we would explain below). This is because exposing your hair to heat removes the natural oils that are present in your hair. Without these natural oils, our hair is prone to not only frizz but will also make our hair brittle and damaged.

We will explain to you today the different ways you might be removing the different oils that are present on your hair. And what you should do if you can’t avoid making these mistakes.

Let’s get started:

What causes frizz?

While there are a lot of reasons why your hair would frizz (That I would list later on), the main factor in all of them is the lack of moisture. When your hair lacks moisture the outer layer of your hair would take the moisture from the air and cause your hair to frizz.

This is why when the climate is humid your hair is more than likely to frizz.

Reason number 1: Your using sulfate-based products

Remember that to avoid frizz you need your hair to be as moisturized as possible. The sulfate that is common in almost all hair products today does the opposite of that.

See sulfate actually removes the natural oils that are keeping your hair moisturized, leaving your hair dry and if used long enough could even disrupt the natural balance of oil production on your hair.

What should I do?

Look for products that are “sulfate-free”, there are a lot of available brands out there now that people are starting to get educated on the effects of sulfate on hair.

See our recommended products at the end of this article.

Reason number 2: Your shower temperature is to damn hot.

Go easy on the hot water. I know it feels great to stand in the hot shower after a long day of work. But doing so would strip your hair of its natural oils that keep them shiny and moisturized.

What should I do?

I know some of you would be unable to give up those relaxing hot showers but try to keep it to a minimum at least. Go for lukewarm instead and a shorter shower time. This is especially important for those whose hair is prone to frizz.

Reason number 3: You’re using your hot tools too much

Another thing that strips the hair of natural moisture is using your hot tools too much. This includes your hairdryer, curling iron, flat iron, and anything that is applying heat to your hair. You should keep this at a minimum because not only will this lead to fizz if used every day it can also damage your hair.

What should I do?

To keep the damage of hot tools to a minimum, use some heat protectant products that are silicon-based. This would add an extra barrier from your hair to your tools, lessening the chance of you damaging your hair significantly.

Another thing we recommend is using the right attachment for your hair type and using the lowest setting your hair can tolerate. And make sure that your hydrating your hair before using any kind of hot tool.

Reason number 4: You’re using the wrong towel.

Did you know that wrapping your hair with a towel can actually be damaging? This is because a normal abrasive towel draws out moisture on your hair too fast and can lead to frizz.

What should I do?

Invest in a microfiber towel and just gently blot the hair until dry.

Reason number 5: Humidity

This is a big one for our curly hair friends. Humidity causes the curls to frizz and lose their definition. This is because humidity causes the hydrogen bonds to form between the proteins of your hair

What should I do?

Use an anti-frizz hairspray before going out.

Reason number 6: Your hair products contain alcohol.

Another product that sucks the moisture on your hair is alcohol, making your hair brittle and more prone to frizz.

What should I do?

Instead of using alcohol-based products, try to find oil-based products. Oil-based products do the opposite of alcohol-based products by locking in the moisture instead.

As an added benefit oil-based products also make your hair shinier and moisturized.

Summary

The key to making your hair less frizzy is moisture. Without moisture, it’s a sure way to not only get frizz but to damage your hair entirely. This is why heat is the number one cause of hair damage, you should always be mindful of how much heat you expose your hair to.

If it’s unavoidable for you to get exposed to heat then you should always apply the proper precautions in order to avoid hair damage. Like what we listed above you need to apply heat protectant products before using any hot tools like a hairdryer or a flat iron.

You should also take it easy if you always use hot water while showering. Showering with hot water every day strips your hair of its natural hair oils that keep them shiny and healthy. You should also consider investing in a microfibre towel, these towels help on avoiding frizz.

Another thing you should consider is to avoid products that have silicon and alcohol in them. These two products that are included in most of the available products in the market actually damage your hair and removes the natural oil that is helpful in providing balance in your hair.
